Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve the symptoms of depression. TMS therapy is an effective treatment for depression when other methods, such as medications or ECT, have failed to alleviate debilitating symptoms, or when patients cannot tolerate medication side effects.
HOW IT WORKS
During your TMS therapy session, a magnetic coil is placed toward the front portion of your scalp (for depression, this area is called the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), just above your forehead. The electromagnet delivers an MRI strength magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the area of your brain that is responsible for mood, and many of the symptoms associated with depression.
Neurostar Advanced TMS is a non-invasive and non-drug treatment that takes place in the comfort of one of our spa-like TMS clinics. The treatment takes approximately 19 minutes, while patients relax in a dental- like procedure chair. These 19-minute sessions are administered 5-days a week for a period of 4-6 weeks.
During treatment, the patient feels a clicking sound and a slight tapping sensation on their head. There are no effects on alertness, and patients may drive themselves to and from their treatment sessions. There are virtually no side effects associated with TMS, other than, on a rare occasion, a patient may complain of some discomfort at the treatment site or a slight headache, where both subside after a few initial treatments.
